NewsLaw Firm Honored for Housing WorkBertram RantinThe State Newspaper A Columbia law firm has made an impressive case for improved housing for the elderly and disadvantaged. The verdict? Job well done. The South Carolina Bar recently honored Ellis, Lawhorne and Sims, P.A. for its contributions and pro bono work for Home Works of America Inc. The nonprofit, Christian-based organization enables youths — with the help of adults — to repair the homes of needy elderly and other disadvantaged residents. Ellis, Lawhorne and Sims was recognized at the recent House of Delegates meeting during the 2008 Bar Convention. Attorneys and staff at the firm were noted for having donated various legal services benefiting homeowners, youths and the Home Works organization. Attorney Cliff Moore of the firm serves as chairman of the Home Works board of directors. Several others at the firm regularly provide general counsel for various issues related to the work of the nonprofit. “Time after time, legal questions are posed of Ellis and are positioned on the front burner, said Hank Chardos, Home Works executive director. “The respective attorneys display genuine interest and concern to understand the particular situation and then respond in a timely manner.” Many of the firm’s employees have helped repair homes by participating in one-day blitzes, cooking for volunteers, working on overnight trips and providing financial support. “It has been the efforts outside of the law offices that have been special,” Chardos said. Since Home Works started in 1996, more than 1,000 homeowners have received home repairs and modifications. During that time, upward of 14,000 teen and adult volunteers have teamed up to complete building projects throughout the Southeast and around the world.
